Smile 2010 Logo
Congratulations to Joanne Harris, the deserving winner of our £5,000 Smile 2010 competition.
Our finalists met at the Practice on 24th January for the final judging, which was an incredibly difficult task for all five of our judges, all of whom would have been happy to award any one of our lovely finalists a smile makeover.
Joanne is 40 this year, and has been troubled by a childhood accident which damaged her front teeth. She has also devoted much of her time to her young family and her autistic son. She vowed to herself on 1st January that 2010 would be her year.
Joanne, we are delighted to help make your wishes come true.
We will be following Joanne’s story as her smile is transformed by the team here.
Johnsons Hairdressing in Warrington and Stockton Heath are providing Joanne with a hair makeover to the value of £150.
Smile 2010 Competition
Entries are now closed for this competition. We have been overwhelmed by the quantity and quality of the entries this year and are going to find it virtually impossible to choose the winner of a Smile Makeover worth up to £5,000.
We will announce the 5 lucky finalists on 18th February who will go through to the final judging of the winner on 24th February.
In addition Johnsons Hairdressing in Warrington and Stockton Heath are providing the lucky winner with a hair makeover to the value of £150.

One day, the tooth fairy could save your child’s life.
We are pleased to announce a new partnership with the innovative BioEDEN tooth cell bank.
A multinational company based just a few minutes way in Daresbury, Bioeden stores stem cells from your child’s baby tooth which can be used for future stem cell therapy treatments.
This means that stem cells can be captured in an easy, convenient, non invasive way- so when your child’s baby tooth falls out, BioEden collects the stem cells.
Stem cell therapy treatment is an exciting new area of medicine in that it hopes to treat disease by replacing disfunctional or diseased cells with healthy, functioning ones. It is believed that this may eventually offer remedies for Parkinsons, Diabetes, Alzheimers disease as well as spinal cord injuries, amongst many other conditions currently with live research studies underway. All that is needed when your child’s tooth falls out is to use the special sterile container we give you, and send straight away to the tooth bank. BioEden then harvest the stem cells and store them in two locations to maintain top security.
For full details on BioEden, please ask one of the dentists or therapists for an information pack or arrange for a free consultation with one of the dentists who can explain the Bioeden concept in greater detail. Don’t forget to mention Dental Solutions to receive free storage worth £45 for 6 months as part of a special introductory offer we have negotiated on your behalf.

Richard is nationally and internationally respected for his work in the area of implant dentistry, in addition to training, lecturing and mentoring in this area for a number of years. Richard has placed over 1500 implants in the last 3 years alone.
A Lymm resident himself, Richard commented, ‘I’m delighted to be joining Gavin’s successful team, many of whom I already know.’
Commented Gavin Laidlaw ‘I’ve been an admirer of Richard’s work over the years, and it gives me great satisfaction to welcome him to the team and offer dental implants to our existing and new patients here at the Practice.’
Heather and Danielle exam success
As part of our continuing investment in training and development for all our staff, we are delighted to congratulate Heather and Danielle on their recent exam successes.
Heather has recently passed her Intensive Radiology exams at Salford University as a result of 6 months hard study on legislation, regulation and patient care together with much practical case study experience. She is now fully qualified to take any type of dental x-ray at the Practice.
Danielle has now also completed her NVQ Level 3 in Dental Nursing. This has been the result of a year-long course which covers all aspects of the latest developments in dental and patient care including sterilisation procedures.
Commented Gavin Laidlaw ‘ I’m delighted for Heather and Danielle, who have spent many hours burning the midnight oil to achieve these results. Continuing to learn and develop is engrained in our team ethos, and their knowledge and qualifications will keep our team up to date with the latest developments in Nursing and Radiography’.
Amalgam fillings in the Press
You may have seen or read recent articles on ITV’s Tonight show or The Observer on the alleged side effects of amalgam fillings.
‘ Author Pratchett blames his Alzheimer's on mercury fillings’ Observer 15 February 2009
Dental amalgam fillings, which contain 50% mercury, are under renewed scrutiny, although there is no hard evidence to support Pratchett’s beliefs. More than three million were inserted last year in the UK. Sweden last month banned all mercury products, including fillings, and Norway and Denmark have done the same.
Peter Ward of the British Dental Association said the safety of mercury fillings had been subjected to numerous reviews and none had found evidence that they increase the risk of developing serious illnesses.
Here at Dental Solutions we prefer to fill teeth with white fillings, and not just for cosmetic reasons.
Stated Gavin Laidlaw ‘White fillings mean great smiles. We have been removing amalgam fillings for our patients for a number of years now. Whilst the potential side effects of amalgam fillings have yet to be proven, here at the Practice we prefer to use white fillings as they provide a more holistic approach to dentistry.’
If you are interested in removing your old amalgam fillings please call our reception team on 01925 756565, and they will arrange a free consultation with one of our dentists.
Facial Rejuvenation Plan
We are introducing a new prepayment plan for our facial rejuvenation patients who are keen to budget for their treatment with regular monthly payments.
As an additional incentive patients will receive an extra 5% discount for treatment when they join the plan. Commented Gavin Laidlaw ‘We have listened to our patients, who wanted us to introduce a regular payment plan for their facial rejuvenation treatments. We will create an individual plan with each patient in advance, so each receive the optimal treatment across a year.’
Please arrange a free consultation with either Gavin or Sophie who are more than happy to discuss the details of the plan with you.
Ireland calling
We have had a number of enquiries from potential new Irish patients who want to hop across the Irish sea to Lymm for their dentistry.
Explained Gavin Laidlaw ‘The weak pound, combined with the low cost of flying to and from Ireland to either Manchester or Liverpool airport means that our cosmetic dentistry has become extremely affordable to many Irish people who have seen our web site and heard of our recent successes.’
Private Dentistry Awards 2008
We are delighted to hear that we have been nominated again this year for the prestigious Private Dentistry Awards, held each November at the Intercontinental Hotel, Park Lane in London.
This year we have been shortlisted for two awards - Best Patient Care and Best Employer. Last year we were winners of the Best Marketing category (pictured below).
Commented Gavin Laidlaw ‘It’s a real endorsement for all the hard work by the team here, and our continual desire to raise the bar in dentistry. We are viewed by the profession as one of the leading practices in the country .’

Gill, Kerry, Janet, Clare and Gavin receiving last year’s Best Marketing award.
Saturday Morning Appointments
We have started to introduce Saturday morning appointments for longer tooth whitening and hygienist appointments. This means that we can further reduce your waiting time to see the team here, and give you more flexibility in terms of day of week you can visit us.
Facial Rejuvenation
Both Gavin Laidlaw and Sophie Parker are fully qualified and insured to carry out facial rejuvenation treatments including botulinum and fillers. Sophie has recently added to her extensive knowledge of this increasingly popular field by adding Vistabel qualifications to her portfolio. Please call our reception team on 01925 756565 to arrange a free no obligation consultation. Sophie and Gavin are happy to answer any questions concerns you may have.
BDA Good Practice
Fantastic news! We have just been accredited as a British Dental Association Good Practice. This is the result of over a year’s hard work by the team here at Dental Solutions, spearheaded by Nicola Corless, our Practice Manager. Nicola commented
‘I’m delighted that we are the first Practice in Lymm to be awarded this honour.
We have met some very strict criteria and guidelines set out by the BDA to provide top quality dental care to our patients. We also met their targets for professional development and training for the team. It means that we can stay at the forefront of developments in dentistry.’

Patient Survey
Many of you, 100 patients to be precise, were asked to complete a short survey earlier in the year. We wanted to find out how you rated the team and the facilities here at Dental Solutions. We had some spectacular results, with 82% rating their time with the dentist as excellent and 81% rating our facilities as excellent.
99% would recommend Dental Solutions to a friend. We get many new patients joining our Practice each month who say they have been recommended to us by existing patients, so a big thank you for your support.
If you have any suggestions for improvements to the service and facilities on offer, please e mail us at smile@gavinismydentist.com, or speak to our Reception team on 01925 756565
Feed the Ducks
We have been offering our younger and young at heart patients cones of special food discs to feed to the ducks and swans at the canal outside the Practice. Donations can be made to the RSPB at Reception. Pictured here is Gavin Laidlaw presenting a cheque for £100 to John Goodier, Lymm’s RSPB representative and patient at the Practice.

Hygienist Update
Our hygienists can now provide ‘deep clean’ periodontal treatments. These more lengthy treatments can provide a full mouth disinfection and with the use of local anaesthetic, and can reduce or remove bacterial deposits from deep beneath the gum line.
Lisa Meredith, our Dental Therapist at the Practice explains ‘The importance of good oral hygiene cannot be underestimated. It can have far reaching effects on dental and overall health.’ Picture of healthy smile
